Während der Verhandlung vor dem Obersten Gerichtshof wurde eine Videoaufnahme des Verhörs von Iossif Schatilo gezeigt, der als Opfer im Strafverfahren gegen den Henker von Chatyn Konstantin Smowski auftritt.
Iossif Schatilo war zehn Jahre alt, als das Strafkommando des 118. Polizeibataillons im Kreis Logoiski eine Strafaktion durchführte. Zu dieser Zeit versteckte er sich mit seiner Mutter im Wald. Von den Ereignissen auf der Straße nach Pleschtschenizy weiß er aus den Worten seines jüngeren Bruders, der überlebt hat.
Der Zeuge erinnert sich, dass die Ereignisse genau im Jahr 1943 stattfanden, als Chatyn niedergebrannt wurde. Der Dorfvorsteher trieb das ganze Dorf zur Arbeit in den Wald. "Dann umzingelten die Deutschen sie, trieben sie aus dem Wald auf die Straße und jagten sie nach Pleschtschenizy", sagte er. - Den Jüngeren wurde befohlen zu fliehen. Die anderen (die es nicht schafften) wurden auf den Boden geworfen und geschlagen. Dem Zeugen zufolge wurden mehr als 30 Menschen auf dem Boden liegend erschossen.
Iossif Schatilo sagte, dass seine beiden Brüder zu diesem Zeitpunkt auf der Straße waren. Der jüngere überlebte, während der ältere getötet wurde - vier Kugeln trafen ihn in die Brust. Die ukrainischen SS-Männer hätten mit automatischen Gewehren geschossen. "Der Deutsche kam und verbot ihnen, auf den Liegenden zu schießen. Aber sie schossen trotzdem", sagte er.
Nachdem sie die Lebenden nach Pleschtschenizy getrieben hatten, wurden sie später mit der Anweisung entlassen, die Leichen zu verscharren.
Iossif Schatilo, geboren 1931, wohnhaft im Kreis Logoiski, konnte aufgrund seines fortgeschrittenen Alters und seines Gesundheitszustands nicht zur Verhandlung nach Minsk kommen.
