An eco-installation was presented at the OK16 cultural center in Minsk as part of the #покедпакет&пэт campaign. Kastrychnickaja street produces 20 thousand plastic bottles a week – just as much as there is in this bus. Nearby they put a stop sign – Dead End.
“A dead end is the direction we are moving towards because of our unconsciousness and irresponsible consumption of disposable plastic,” says Natalia Grintsevich, director of the Operator of Secondary Material Resources, “Just imagine: if one Minsk street produces a whole bus of plastic waste in a few days, then what is happening to the capital, country, world. Every year Belarusians throw out more than a billion PET bottles! The modern era of disposable plastic things, whose life is 10 minutes to 2 months, leads to an avalanche of garbage that we do not see due to timely removal from our yards. But each person has the power to influence the quantity and destiny of garbage – either he will send it for recycling or to a landfill”.
The eco-installation initiators – the Operator of Secondary Material Resources and the Goal 99 movement – have already begun to transform Kastrychnickaja street into a plastic-free territory.
To reduce the consumption of plastic, each indifferent person can choose the most convenient way of making things different:
1. Get your own refillable bottle / mug;
2. Buy drinks in more environmentally friendly glass containers;
3. Hand over used plastic for recycling.
In the coming days, the project initiators will put containers for collecting secondary resources near the establishments, and will also present special containers for collecting glass, paper and plastic waste to offices wishing to join the action. Kastrychnickaja bars will join the eco-trend, and will offer guests to "drink for the health of the planet", motivating them to order drinks in glassware.
The event was attended by a representative of the first ever vegan fast food chain in Belarus MonkeyFood – communications specialist Marta Skugareva. According to her, there are not enough vegetarian establishments in Minsk yet, but every year there are more and more.
