The Belarusian delegation expressed concern over the increasing politicization of UNESCO at the 217th Session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Speaking at the plenary session Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to UNESCO Kirill Grushevsky highlighted the importance of the decision adopted by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in September 2023 that voiced extreme concern over Poland's construction of the border fence in Belovezhskaya Pushcha and that urged to send a mission of experts to the site to assess the negative impact of the fence on the ground.
Responding to statements about the looming global food crisis, Kirill Grushevsky noted that one of the factors undermining global food security is the illegal use by Western countries of unilateral coercive measures against Belarus, including Lithuania's blocking of access to the sea for Belarusian potash fertilizers in violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and other international documents.
“Speaking about the rights of journalists and freedom of speech, the Belarusian diplomat urged mass media to stick to the principles of legality, impartiality and objectivity when spreading information,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Commenting on the speeches of individual foreign delegations, the representative of Belarus emphasized that children from areas affected by the armed conflict in Ukraine take part in Belarus' rehabilitation and health improvement programs in an absolutely voluntary and open way.
“The Belarusian delegation also expressed concern over the growing politicization of UNESCO and attempts by individual countries to use the Organization's platform to discuss issues that go beyond its scope of reference,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed.
