Javid Hamzatov of Belarus claimed the Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling bronze in the men’s 85kg class in Rio. The 26-year-old Belarusian saw off Bulgaria's Nikolay Bayryako in a bronze medal bout. Hamzatov’s rival reached the bronze final through the repechage and finished his last fight 10 minutes before he encountered the Belarusian wrestler. Javid Hamzatov seized the initiative from the very start and took a solid win, 4-1.
Javid Hamzatov launched his Rio campaign by beating China’s Peng Fei 4-0 in the round of last 16. The Belarusian wrestler then left no chances to Austria’s Amer Hrustanovic, 9-0, before losing to Ukraine’s Zhan Beleniuk 0-6.
Javid Hamzatov took up wrestling in Dagestan and moved to Belarus in 2006. The Belarusian won bronze at the 2013 World Wrestling Championships.
