Top Belarusian official in Myanmar for presidential inauguration

On instruction from the Belarusian president, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko is on a visit to the city of Naypyidaw to attend the inauguration ceremony of the president of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

The country’s incumbent leader, Min Aung Hlaing, was elected President by members of the Union Assembly on 3 April 2026.

At Nay Pyi Taw International Airport, the Belarusian delegation led by Igor Sergeyenko was met by Myanmar’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Ko Ko Kyaw. During a brief conversation, the parties exchanged views on the development of Belarusian-Myanmar relations and discussed the program of the visit.

Igor Sergeyenko is planned to have meetings with President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Union Assembly of Myanmar Khin Yi, as well as other officials. The Belarusian delegation includes Bellegprom Chairperson Nadezhda Lazarevich.

Igor Sergeyenko’s visit began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial to Fallen Heroes in the capital city of Naypyidaw, as a tribute to the military personnel and civilians who heroically died in the struggle for the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as during counter-terrorism operations. During his visit to the memorial, Igor Sergeyenko signed the Book of Distinguished Guests.

Myanmar is a long-standing partner of Belarus in Southeast Asia. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1999. The year 2025 marked a breakthrough in Belarus-Myanmar relations. The two countries' leaders met on several occasions, and history was made with the first-ever high-level visits to Minsk and Naypyidaw.

In 2025, dozens of meetings and negotiations were held between heads of government bodies, organizations, and enterprises. These contacts are helping to strengthen the friendship, trust, and mutual understanding between Belarus and Myanmar, which is an essential condition for developing mutually beneficial cooperation at all levels and in all spheres of mutual interest.

In December 2025, a Belarusian delegation participated as international observers in the parliamentary elections in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
