Lukashenko: No alternative to peace talks on Ukraine

There is no alternative to peace talks on Ukraine, but they should be an open and respectful dialogue that will help find a compromise, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with the Russian magazine Razvedchik, BelTA has learned.

"There is no alternative to peace talks on Ukraine. However, it must be an open and respectful dialogue that will make it possible to find a compromise, taking into account the interests of all parties to the conflict," the head of state emphasized.

According to him, here’s hoping that U.S. President Donald Trump truly wants to end this conflict. “During the meeting in Alaska [the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin], I think Trump handled his role well (he played exclusively the role of a mediator who wanted to hear Russia's position as a party to the conflict firsthand) regardless of what the European and partly U.S. press wrote,” the Belarusian leader said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that immediately before the talks in Alaska, he had a telephone conversation with the U.S. president. It was a frank and productive discussion. "We also spoke about Ukraine. I presented my vision and my point of view to Trump. He listened to it. As for how useful our conversation was ahead of the meeting in Alaska that is for him to judge," the head of state added.
