Belarus, Hungary seek closer cooperation in nuclear energy

Belarus and Hungary have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy, the Belarusian Energy Ministry told BelTA.

The terms and areas of cooperation were discussed by Belarusian Energy Minister Denis Moroz and Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó during a meeting on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Belarus and Hungary enjoy a relationship built on trust and openness. “Political cooperation is developing, bilateral contacts are strengthening, including in the energy sector,” Denis Moroz remarked. He highlighted the achievements of the joint working group on nuclear energy cooperation. “It is a field in which we complement each other and are mutually beneficial,” the minister added.

Péter Szijjártó also expressed interest in continuing cooperation in the nuclear sector. “Our joint work plays an important role in strengthening our cooperation, and this experience is valuable to us,” he said.

In May, the Belarusian Energy Ministry, the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, and Hungary’s Paks II Nuclear Power Plant signed a cooperation roadmap for 2025–2027. It outlines activities for exchanging experience in nuclear infrastructure development, nuclear and radiation safety, radioactive waste and spent fuel management, and scientific and technical support for nuclear power plant operations.
