Elena Kasko, UNFPA Assistant Representative in Belarus, comments on the Fund's activities in Belarus in a short interview with Grigory Mityushnikov
UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha visiting Radio Belarus International
"By signing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Belarus has taken a big step forward. Basically, today the country has made an even greater progress in this area than some of the nationas that acceddeed to the Convention much earlier. The most important change that needs to happen is in the social status of people with disabilities, of which Belarus is home to 540,000. They should not be seen as passive recipients of assistance, and should actively defend their right to live a full life. The next step for Belarus should be the ratification of the Convention by the Parliament. I expect that this will happen next spring."
