FM: Belarus is ready to return to CFE Treaty provided NATO member states come back to it too

Belarus is ready to return to the CFE Treaty provided NATO member countries come back to it too, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik said in his speech at a meeting of the CSTO Foreign Ministers Council in Almaty, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"We have repeatedly said that any peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict and any discussion of European and Eurasian security issues without the participation of both Russia and Belarus are absolutely futile," Sergei Aleinik said. "An approach based on discrimination and attempts to exclude sovereign countries from the dialogue on the most important issues of our time is a road to nowhere."

"Against this background, the militarization of the entire European region continues," the minister said.

"The suspension of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) by NATO member countries gives them a free hand in building up unprecedented military capabilities. In the current situation, Belarus could not but mirrored the measures in response. At the same time, we are ready to return to the CFE Treaty, provided that NATO member countries come back to it too. Although we have no illusions about this," Sergei Aleinik said.
