Expert comments on major areas of cooperation between Belarus, Libya

Libya is interested in cooperating with Belarus in agriculture, industry, food, and the military-technical sector, Nikolai Buzin, member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, said in a recent episode of BelTA’s YouTube project On Point.

“We have excellent agricultural machinery, a culture of farming, and the relevant competencies for training specialists. All of this is in demand in Libya. There is no doubt that Libya may have interests in military-technical, industrial, and food cooperation,” said Nikolai Buzin. “Just over 6% of the land is used for food production in Libya. They purchase everything else from their neighbors. By the way, Europe supplies a great deal there. Why shouldn't Belarusian food or our machinery go there, too?”

The expert recalled that Libya was once the initiator of a project to use subterranean waters under the Sahara for regional development. In his opinion, if such a project were implemented, the area of agricultural land in Libya would increase significantly. This would, in turn, create a need for agricultural machinery, which Belarus could also provide.

“We have always supported Libya in its most difficult times. We have never deceived the Libyan people. Today we are saying that we are ready to work day and night to help bring order to Libya and improve the lives of its people. This is what our president says, and he does not make empty promises,” the expert emphasized.

Nikolai Buzin also pointed out that representatives of the Libyan leadership are building contacts with Belarus and Russia. “This attempt to build a political dialogue suggests that Libya is ripe for resolving its internal conflicts. But to achieve this, political will is needed both internally and externally, as well as economic stability,” he believes. “The country is destroyed and torn apart, and combat operations are ongoing on its territory. They are fueled from the outside, but they cannot continue forever.”
