Sabalenka reaches Madrid Open for fourth time

Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka will play in the Madrid Open final for the fourth time, following her 6-3, 7-5 semifinal victory over World No.17 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, BelTA has learned.

Saturday's final at this year's first WTA 1000 clay-court event will pit Aryna Sabalenka against World No.4 Coco Gauff of the United States. The American player dismissed defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland (World No.2) 6-1, 6-1.

On her way to the final Aryna Sabalenka defeated Russia’s world number 76 Anna Blinkova, 6-3, 6-4, Belgium’s world number 28 Elise Mertens, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, World No.44 Peyton Stearns of the United States, 6-2, 6-4, and saw off World No.36 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, 7-6, 7-6.     

Aryna Sabalenka won the event in 2021 and 2023. Last year she lost to Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the final.

The 2025 Madrid Open will be over on 4 May. The winner will earn €985,000 and 1,000 points.
