Belarus and Switzerland intend to advance cooperation in healthcare and economy. The statement was made by President of the Switzerland-Belarus Friendship Association Margret Kiener Nellen during the meeting with Minsk Oblast Governor Aleksandr Turchin on 9 July, BelTA has learned.
Margret Kiener Nellen said: “Cooperation in healthcare was discussed in February. Bringing medics from Switzerland to the Alexandrov National Cancer Center of Belarus was the idea. But we couldn’t invite the medics due to the coronavirus – there is a shortage of doctors in Switzerland now. I intend to bring the medics and visit the cancer center in autumn. This is why we will discuss all the ideas mentioned with regard to cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine of University of Bern during the next visit.”
She also reminded that the meeting in February touched upon cooperation between economic institutions. “COVID-19 happened after our meeting. Contacts between people were impossible. But I remember it, interest and intentions still remain,” the president said.
On the whole, the organization is ready to provide comprehensive support in relations between countries. “We are open. Tell us how we can help and we will,” she concluded.
Aleksandr Turchin also stressed that all the outlined plans would be realized. “In economy we will continue moving in the assigned direction. It is important to bring cooperation in healthcare to fruition. We are interested in a joint education program. For Minsk Oblast it is particularly important to have the ability to train our university students with assistance of Swiss partners. I am convinced that together we will do a great deal to advance relations between our countries,” the Minsk Oblast governor noted.
In 2019 trade between Minsk Oblast and Switzerland totaled $141.5 million, with export at $15.3 million and import at $126.2 million.
