Belarus expects to bring its relations with Mongolia to a qualitatively new level, Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko said during a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to Belarus Gunaajav Baigalmaa in Minsk on 18 August, BelTA has learned.
The first-ever visit of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to Mongolia took place in June 2024. Following the talks, the heads of state signed a treaty on friendly relations and cooperation between Belarus and Mongolia. “We hope that this treaty will take our relations to an entirely new level. The treaty has been ratified by our parliament,” Igor Sergeyenko said.
The Speaker emphasized that the task of the legislative branch is to ensure the implementation of all agreements reached during the visit at the highest level.
According to him, Belarus attaches great importance to strengthening cooperation with Mongolia in all areas. The core of interstate interaction is trade, economic, and investment ties. The Belarusian side also counts on the intensification of business contacts and increased effectiveness of cooperation. Bilateral trade is expected to be facilitated by the interim trade agreement between the EAEU and Mongolia, which has already entered into force. New opportunities are opening up for joint projects in agriculture and industry.
The two countries have established parliamentary relations, which should contribute to the development of interstate interaction. Friendship groups have been set up, and contacts are being maintained. The parties support each other, including in international parliamentary organizations. At the same time, it was noted that the parliamentary potential has not yet been fully utilized.
The parties are exploring opportunities for cooperation in humanitarian matters and education, cultural ties.
MPs of Mongolia and Belarus are interacting very actively in international parliamentary organizations, Sergei Rachkov, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives, told the media.
"It is clear that the focus of all cooperation and interaction, both at the governmental and parliamentary levels, is on economy. This theme is important both for the Mongolian and Belarusian peoples,” the MP said. He reported that in the first half of the year, work had significantly intensified: trade rose by more than 13%, and Belarusian exports surged by more than 21%.
Mongolia is interested in farm machines, BelAZ dump trucks, MAZ vehicles, and elevators. The Belarusian side is ready to expand cooperation in the agricultural sector. In general, Mongolia is also an agricultural country and pays great attention to this sector, while Belarus has accumulated considerable experience in agricultural development and has relevant technologies that it is ready to share.
Sergei Rachkov recalled that the cooperation roadmap between the two countries will be completed this year. Work is underway on a new document, which will be based on a certain continuity and new promising areas. “The prospects are very significant, but efforts need to be stepped up in all areas,” the MP noted.
