Belarus aims to make it to top 50 by GDP per capita by 2040

Belarus plans to make it to the top 50 countries in terms of GDP per capita by 2040 (at purchasing power parity), Belarusian Economy Minister Yuri Chebotar told the media before a meeting of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers to consider the draft National Strategy for Sustainable Development of Belarus until 2040 on 5 February, BelTA learned.

"The National Strategy for Sustainable Development is a key document describing our forecast, our vision of the country's future until 2040. This strategy will be significantly different from the past ones. It will contain more than 90 indicators, which is a first for us. We have set the most ambitious goals, because we see that the world is developing very dynamically. Our country needs to move faster, at a pace much higher than the world," Yuri Chebotar said.

In addition, after the approval of the strategy, all industries and regions will need to develop their development strategies for 10 to 15 years. "We have already started this process together with the industries Such strategies have been drafted," the minister added.

"We understand that in order to achieve ambitious indicators, appropriate plans are needed. All this will be achieved through the program of social and economic development of our country and target plans, which will be adopted annually," Yuri Chebotar stressed.

He also outlined the main priorities and tasks envisioned by the draft National Strategy for Sustainable Development of Belarus until 2040. "Three key blocks: human development, economic development and ecology. In terms of economy we set ambitious goals - to enter the top 50 countries in terms of GDP per capita (purchasing power parity). This is a very ambitious task. It means the doubling of growth in 15 years. In terms of ecology, the key thing is our living environment. We want our people to be healthy and live longer. As for human potential, the main thing is the demographic balance, education, healthcare," the minister emphasized.

"The difference of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development as a comprehensive document is that all elements are connected to each other. For example, the doubling of growth does not mean that we will have to produce twice as many products. The key thing is to achieve qualitative growth. For example, we aim for a significant increase in robotization - more than 150 machines per 10,000 people. There is also a need for new quality education to match the future needs of the real economy. This is also provided for in the draft strategy. Each element makes up the overall shape of our state in 15 years. The main thing is to improve the quality of life through sustainable economic development," Yuri Chebotar emphasized.

The preparation of the draft strategy was preceded by an analysis of the current situation both in Belarus and in the world. "The emerging external challenges and threats were taken into account. The world does not stand still. Technologies are developing rapidly. Especially the countries of the Asian region where they are moving at a much greater pace, including thanks to the digital economy. We understand such challenges and set appropriate tasks," the minister concluded.

I recently learned my surname is not Polish, but Belarusian. I heard you on shortwave in the past and am so happy to listen online in English. We hear nothing about Belarus here in the US so I am so glad to learn about your country. Keep on broadcasting in English. I also joined the Hoererklub on Facebook as I can understand German. If you have information or a station pennant, I will very much appreciate it.
