From an address by Charge d'Affaires – Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Belarus Shigehiro Mimori

Materials provided to Radio Belarus International by the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Belarus (Minsk, 07.12.15)

“It takes almost a whole day to reach Japan from Belarus but, in spite of their geographical distance, our two countries have become closer and our relations in recent years have been positively developing in many fields. First of all, Japan and Belarus have been actively cooperating to reduce the effects of catastrophes, especially those related to accidents at nuclear power stations.

Let me remind with gratitude that, in the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster of March 2011, Belarus was one of the first countries to provide Japan with full assistance and support, which still continues to these days, in the post-disaster reconstruction areas. One year after Fukushima the governments of Japan and Belarus signed an "Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of Belarus concerning Cooperation to Advance Aftermath Response to Accidents at Nuclear Power Stations". As a result, a Japanese-Belarusian committee held meetings twice this year, once in Tokyo in March and then in November in Minsk.

Moreover, every year the Belarusian government invites children from the Fukushima area for rehabilitation in children’s rehabilitation centers. This year alone, more than 90 children were invited to Belarus for this purpose.

On its part, the Japanese government continues to support Belarus through the so-called «Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects» which helps people who live in the areas most affected by the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. More than 30 projects have been carried out since 2004 for a total sum of about 3 million US Dollars.

The year 2016 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster as well as the 5th anniversary of the Great East-Japan Earthquake. My greatest hope is that these dreadful memories would encourage an even stronger cooperation between our two countries for an improved response in the aftermath of similar catastrophes.

Also the political and economic relations between Japan and Belarus are developing in a positive way. In May 2015, the Japanese Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs visited Minsk and met with the representatives of the Belarusian government led by First Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Matushevsky. Both countries expressed their mutual desire to further develop the economic relations between Tokyo and Minsk. Then in July of this year the representatives of some Japanese companies visited Belarus and along with their Belarusian counterparts took part in the Belarusian-Japanese business meeting. I do hope that in the near future the economic relations between our two countries will keep growing to the benefit of both our peoples.

In the field of culture, for the third year in a row the Embassy of Japan organized the so-called «Japanese Autumn in Belarus», in order to introduce to the Belarusian people some aspects of the Japanese culture and to promote a deeper mutual understanding. From September to November more than 20 cultural events dedicated to the Japanese cinema, theatre, tea ceremony, martial arts, traditional music, calligraphy, etc. took place in different cities of Belarus and were successfully welcomed everywhere.

Furthermore, the cooperation between our Embassy, the Japan Foundation and the National State TV and Radio Company of the Republic of Belarus has made it possible to broadcast, for the first time on Belarusian Television, the Japanese TV series “Carnation”. Next year the Embassy of Japan is planning to continue its cooperation with Belarusian TV in this field by broadcasting several Japanese animated movies.

In conclusion, the Embassy of Japan will continue to work hard to promote and strengthen a further cooperation between Japan and Belarus.”

I recently learned my surname is not Polish, but Belarusian. I heard you on shortwave in the past and am so happy to listen online in English. We hear nothing about Belarus here in the US so I am so glad to learn about your country. Keep on broadcasting in English. I also joined the Hoererklub on Facebook as I can understand German. If you have information or a station pennant, I will very much appreciate it.
