Minister: Belarus creates infrastructure to foster AI development

Kirill Zalessky

Belarus is creating the necessary infrastructure to foster the development of artificial intelligence technologies, Minister of Communications and Informatization Kirill Zalessky said during the international IT-Akademgrad forum Artificial Intelligence in Belarus on 13 October, BelTA has learned.

“Building a large language model from scratch is too expensive and time-consuming. We are taking a different path. Today, there are enough solutions in the international open-source model market that can be adopted and applied. This requires an appropriate infrastructure foundation, quite complex and expensive equipment. We are working on this topic, shaping the national artificial intelligence perimeter. We are developing the infrastructure foundation, building its software component, and assembling the solutions that will allow us to use artificial intelligence as effectively as possible in public administration and real economy in the future. The use of AI should not be just a trend, but must deliver a real economic effect,” Kirill Zalessky said.

According to him, the forum is an excellent opportunity to align priorities, look at business solutions, evaluate their effectiveness and prospects for implementation in a particular subject area of the economy and social life, and make decisions on the right vector of moving forward.

The minister also spoke about legislative regulation of AI. “We will have to establish a certain regulatory order. However, I would not rush to do this before we start using specific solutions. Everything must be balanced. We must not restrict for ourselves what we do not yet widely use,” he noted.

Industry Minister Andrei Kuznetsov noted in turn that the manufacturing sector actively leverages IT solutions, which are now evolving into artificial intelligence. “We are moving beyond processing automation toward automated design and engineering of certain machines and components, which significantly speeds up workflows. For instance, whereas transitioning from one model to another previously took five to six years, we now get it done in just two to three. This is a direct result of using AI. Notably, machinery powered by these technologies is undergoing trials in agriculture,” the minister said.

The international IT-Akademgrad forum Artificial Intelligence in Belarus has brought together leading scientists, engineers, business and education representatives to discuss key trends and prospects for the development of artificial intelligence technologies. This is a platform for the presentation of domestic developments, exchange of experience, and search for new partners in the field of AI and robotics.

The exhibition features solutions in healthcare, education, industry, energy, ecology, and cybersecurity. The variety of projects allows seeing how widely AI technologies are applied to solve practical tasks.
