On the way to Cambridge (interview)

More than once gifted Belarusian students have won grants to study at the most prestigious universities of the world: Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Sorbonne. The opportunity to take internships abroad, to get a master's degree or to complete postgraduate studies is provided by the leading universities of Belarus. For example, it is not a secret that Belarusian State University is very active internationally. Today it has the highest number of international agreements in the country – more than 220, which have been concluded with universities and research institutes from more than 50 countries of the world.

Thanks to one of such programs, a former student of the Department of Biology of the Belarusian State University Sergey Gladkov, first went to the University of Edinburgh, and then to the Cambridge graduate school.

How he managed to do that, what took his breath away in Great Britain, and what rite of passage he had to go through, you will learn from our exclusive interview!

Sergey Gladkov, our countryman, who is now studying at the Cambridge graduate school, is a future biologist. The propensity towards this science became evident when he was at school. One proof of that is the impressive number of victories at school academic competitions. Therefore, Sergey did not think too much what university to enter. All his time was devoted to two passions: biology and study, well, including reading of the classics of English literature in the original language. By the way, that’s how he learned English, but he hadn't even thought about a hobby until the moment when His Majesty Theater turned his world upside down!

It is obvious that students, who have the opportunity to study abroad, receive invaluable experience: there's communication with future colleagues from all over the world, making contacts with students from different countries. Not to mention the fact that you can express yourself, learn many interesting and useful things, improve your language skills and, of course, promote the image of your native land on a global scale.

However, besides the alluring prospects to get everything that we mentioned above, there is also the flipside. Being away from home, relatives, close people and friends many students face the problem of total loneliness. And Sergey Gladkov is no exception. But he managed to solve it in an unusual way, from my point of view. He began writing poems. His verses were highly appreciated by the French publisher, and... voila – his book of poems “Radost tsveta vechnoi latuni” (The joy of the eternal brass color) was published in Paris, presented in Minsk and soon will be taking part in one of the most prestigious book fairs in France!

You will learn more from our exclusive interview!

The world is full of exciting possibilities! Do not be afraid of the challenges that life throws at us, because overcoming them opens up a new wonderful world! A vivid example is the story of young Belarusian Sergey Gladkov! Mahatma Gandhi once said: “If you want to change the world, start with yourself!”

I recently learned my surname is not Polish, but Belarusian. I heard you on shortwave in the past and am so happy to listen online in English. We hear nothing about Belarus here in the US so I am so glad to learn about your country. Keep on broadcasting in English. I also joined the Hoererklub on Facebook as I can understand German. If you have information or a station pennant, I will very much appreciate it.
